It’s all about the kids

It’s all about the kids

What are you passionate about?

Last week we talked about the importance of family.  I attempted, and hopefully succeeded, to impress upon you how important our family bonds are to us.  In fact, the first thing I tell people when they ask me what distinguishes our gym from every other gym in town is “We are a family gym”.  Anyone who has been on this planet for any length of time should have noticed by now that the family unit of today is much different than it was 30, 40, 50 years ago.  Nowhere is this difference more evident than with our kids.  Sit down while I share with you some sobering statistics.  Kids today belong to the first generation of Americans that have a shorter life-expectancy than their parents.  It has been reported that a little over 50% of kids in this country are overweight.  When we were kids we had about 3-4 hours of random “free play” every day.  Today’s child averages less than 30 minutes (it’s tough to compete with video games, computers, i-gadgets, and hundreds of choices in HD programming 24 hours a day on our 65″ TV’s).  As an Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coach, one statistic that scares me even more is that by the time our children reach the ages of 12-13, 75% of them will give up sports completely.  Even scarier still is that the average number of chin-ups that girls 12-18 in this country can perform is ZERO (boys the same age average 3 – not much better).

We are raising a nation of unfit, overweight, weak, uncoordinated kids. While we as parents must certainly bear a large portion of the responsibility, modern society has definitely changed the dynamics of raising a child.  Kids have so many options with how to spend their time and let’s face it, the world’s not as safe as it used to be.  However,  now that we have admitted that there is a problem, what do we do to fix it?  Wareing’s Gym is a collection of dedicated, PASSIONATE, fitness professionals.  We are passionate about the health of our family and even more passionate about the health of our kids.  If we, as the leaders in the industry, don’t do anything to help our children get fit, who will?  And what does that say about us that we stand aside and watch our children get fatter and less fit and we do nothing?

This is a topic that we have discussed as a staff for many years and have tried an assortment of different programs to incorporate kids but for various reasons we have never been able to make any significant contributions to the community as a whole.  Well, pardon me for borrowing from Samsung, but the next big thing is here!  Wareing’s Gym has just partnered with the Parisi Speed School, the nation’s leading youth sports performance and children’s fitness training company.  Parisi has been training youths and athletes for over 14 years for the purpose of improving their speed, strength, flexibility, nutrition, fitness and most importantly – their self-esteem!  In order to implement this program into our building we will undoubtedly have to make some changes to our floor plan but we promise to continue to deliver everything you expect from Wareing’s Gym! I will be sending you more emails over the next few weeks about this exciting opportunity so you will know exactly how this will affect you and the gym.

Sometimes my kids will ask me how I knew what I wanted to be when I was a grown-up or what careers they should pursue as adults so that they can make a lot of money.  I share with them the best advice I was ever given (I just wish I could remember who gave it to me!): Forget about money. Figure out what you are passionate about and then pursue that passion with unwavering persistence. Do this, and you will be successful beyond your wildest dreams.

We are passionate about our children’s future; what are you passionate about?

That’s all for now. Stay Fit!
